I just got an email invitation for Square Dancing at the Maynardville TN Senior Center (details below).  I can’t remember the last time I square danced — probably in elementary school music class.  I remember there was a boy named Raymond who was missing a hand (it had gotten blown off from a firecracker accident) and nobody wanted to hold his stump as we were doing a promenade but me.  Strange, the things we remember.

I noticed that one of the contacts is Emily Lemming.  Emily is a former school principal from Indiana (I think this is the right state) who now lives in Sharps Chapel.  I had the opportunity to get to know Emily a little better when we both attended the International Quilt Show in Cincinnati OH in the spring.  I didn’t know she square danced!  Sometimes it is scary to try something new and knowing someone there makes it easier.

Everyone is invited.  I especially like the fact that you don’t have to have a partner — Jim can be pretty shy about going to things like this sometimes.  But I won’t let that hold me back. To stay young, we need to keep moving and square dancing is just another way to do that.  Variety is the spice of life.

To get prepared for your first visit, here is a list of square dancing terminology.

Tuesday evening Square Dancing
7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Maynardville TN Senior Center

It’s FREE your first time. Only $4.00 per person after that.  You don’t need special clothes, shoes, rhythm, experience or a partner.  Just come as you are!     There’s some line dancing, too.  If you can walk and follow directions, you can square dance. It’s fun, easy, and good exercise. Everyone is friendly and welcoming.
